History

The City of Cagayan de Oro has experienced tremendous growth in previous years. With its strategic location, the city naturally evolved as the trade and service center for Mindanao. The city’s natural endowments were reinforced by the presence of the basic infrastructure and amenities supported by a focused vision for its economic future. This was made possible by the strategic alliance espoused by both private and government sectors to help shape the landscape and local governance to enhance Cagayan de Oro’s role as a premier trade and service center in the country.

To further rationalize the growth directions of the city, a group of local businessmen identified the need to promote Cagayan de Oro City in a sustained and continuous manner. Thus, in January 2000, Congressman Constantino Jaraula, Congressional Representative, Lone District, Cagayan de Oro, requested the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to gather the key officers of the major companies operating in the city and province to solicit their support for a unified investment promotion program for the city, and at the same time support and encourage preservation and enrichment of its historical identity and cultural heritage. From the Congressional Development Fund, Cong. Jaraula commissioned the University of Asia and the Pacific (UAP) to come up with Strategic Investment Promotion Program for Cagayan de Oro.
